Roger Royse will provide his popular presentation: “Top Ten Legal Mistakes” for startup companies, which is based on his recent book, Dead on Arrival, Avoiding the Legal Mistakes That Could Kill Your Start-Up.  The presentation summarizes the most common legal mistakes that start-up companies and their lawyers make and how to avoid making those mistakes.  Some of those mistakes can be rectified, but many will result in your start-up company being Dead on Arrival when it looks for financing or acquisition opportunities. Knowing what those mistakes are and how to avoid them is essential to starting and building a successful company.  Topics covered include corporate, securities, tax, employment and technology law.

Lisa Chapman has represented startup and mid-sized companies for over twenty years in the areas of employment counseling, employment litigation, commercial litigation and trade secret litigation. In her counseling practice Lisa uses her substantial experience as a trial attorney to counsel companies on employment compliance issues, including wage and hour, employment policies, hiring policies, sexual harassment training, leave of absence and other employment related issues. She regularly counsels companies involved in mergers and acquisitions about due diligence issues relating to employment law. Further, she counsels companies about hiring and firing issues, employee retention, intellectual property management and other compliance issues, all with an eye towards helping them to avoid costly litigation. 

In her counseling practice Lisa uses her substantial experience as a trial attorney to counsel companies on employment compliance issues, including wages and hours, employment policies, hiring policies, sexual harassment training, leave of absence, and other employment related issues. 

Chan Xu received her L.L.B. from Zhongnan University of Economics and Law University in China, and her L.L.M. from Boston University School of Law. Ms. Xu was admitted to the National Bar of People's Republic of China in 2005. She is also a member of the New York State Bar.

While in China, Ms. Xu worked for Deheng Law Firm, concentrating in the areas involving contract disputes, corporate consulting, joint ventures and real estate. After obtaining her L.L.M. from Boston University, she continued her legal education with the law school as a research assistant on the subject of international financial projects.

Ms. Xu's areas of practice include corporate law, contract law and business litigation. In addition to domestic practice, Ms. Xu has an active international practice, focusing on Chinese clients or multinational companies with an interest in developing business relationships in China.

Ms. Xu is a native Mandarin speaker. She is also fluent in English
